Common Childhood Illnesses

Kids are still exposed to germs at school every day. Be prepared and learn about the germs and viruses they could come in contact with.

Flu

Influenza, or the "flu," is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs that is caused by influenza viruses. Flu is sometimes confused with the common cold - but in general, the flu is worse than the common cold. It is also highly contagious; CDC recommends that all children over the age of 6 months receive an annual flu vaccine.

Symptoms

  • Sudden, often high fever
  • Cough (sometimes dry)
  • Achy muscles
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Extreme fatigue

Treatment

Antibiotics will not cure the flu virus. And since flu viruses spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza, or by touching an infected surface, handwashing and cleaning/disinfecting of surfaces are critical in preventing its spread. If you think your child has the flu, contact his/her healthcare provider. Depending on severity of symptoms, the provider may prescribe antiviral medication to help alleviate symptoms.
