Common Childhood Illnesses

Kids are still exposed to germs at school every day. Be prepared and learn about the germs and viruses they could come in contact with.

Giardiasis (Intestinal Parasites)

Giardiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia. The illness affects the digestive tract and is one of the primary causes of diarrhea in the U.S. - and young children are three times more likely to contract the disease. It is usually spread through contaminated water, and can survive the normal amounts of chlorine used to purify community water supplies.

Symptoms

  • Severe watery diarrhea, without blood or mucus
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Large amounts of intestinal gas, often with a swollen belly
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sometimes, a low-grade fever
  • It is also possible to have no symptoms

Treatment

Giardiasis is treated with prescription medicine - usually in liquid form - that kill the parasites. Be sure to ask your child's healthcare provider to tell you about any potential side effects.

A child suffering from giardiasis may also become dehydrated.
