10 to 12 Months Milestones
As your baby approaches his/her first birthday, you will likely be amazed at how much he or she has grown and developed in this first year. Different babies reach various milestones at different rates ... but by the time your baby reaches the age of 12 months, he/ she will probably:
- Use simple gestures (waving "bye-bye")
- Imitate actions during play — for example, he/she may clap when you clap
- Get into a sitting position without help
- Crawl forward on belly or in a hands-and-knees position
- Pull him/herself up to a standing position, and walk holding onto furniture
- Stand momentarily without support; he/she may also walk two or three steps without support
- Put objects into a container and take objects out of container; let go of objects voluntarily
- Try to imitate scribbling
- Pay increasing attention to speech, and respond to simple verbal requests
- Respond to "no" and use simple gestures, such as shaking head for "no"
- Babble with inflection, using words like "dada," "mama" and "uh-oh!"
- Explore objects in many different ways (shaking, banging, throwing, dropping)
- Find hidden objects easily
- Look at correct picture when the image is named, and begin to use objects correctly (drinking from cup, brushing hair, dialing phone, listening to receiver)
- Repeat sounds or gestures for attention, finger-feed him/herself, extend arm or leg to help when being dressed
