Disinfecting Tips

Some germs can live on surfaces for days. A few simple disinfecting tips can help protect your family by stopping the spread of these germs.

Disinfecting: the Basics

Some germs can survive for days on household surfaces like kitchen counter tops, sinks, and phone receivers. But when you disinfect, you are killing germs on these surfaces (when using the product as directed).

Here are basic guidelines for reducing germs in your home to help keep your family healthy:

  • Check for EPA registration. Make sure the product you choose says "disinfectant," and check the label for an EPA registration number. The presence of the EPA number on the label is the only way to be sure that the product you are using has met EPA requirements for killing germs.
  • Do it every day! Germ control is easier when you make quick disinfection a part of your daily routine. Use disinfecting wipes on kitchen countertops and bathroom faucets, handles and sink surfaces daily. This not only kills the germs, but it also makes cleaning day a little easier.
  • Clean up spills when they happen. Zap germs and prevent cross-contamination by getting rid of countertop or refrigerator spills as soon as they happen. Disinfecting these areas not only prevents germ growth; it keeps these germs from spreading to other food, hands, and kitchen surfaces.
  • Throw away germs! If possible, use paper towels and disposable wipes instead of sponges and kitchen cloths that can harbor germs and provide a moist place for them to grow. If you do use sponges or cloth towels, launder them frequently in hot water.
  • Use your dishwasher. Run bottle brushes, pot scrubbers, plastic/dishwasher safe cutting boards, and food prep utensils through a dishwasher cycle on a regular basis.
