Disinfecting Tips

Some germs can live on surfaces for days. A few simple disinfecting tips can help protect your family by stopping the spread of these germs.

How to Disinfect

A few simple "how-to" tips can help ensure that you are disinfecting safely and killing germs.

  • Read product labels. Every product label offers instruction for proper use of that specific product, and not all disinfectants have the same usage instructions. That's why it's important to read label instructions to ensure that you are using each product properly. The label will also confirm that the product has met EPA requirements for killing germs.
  • Rinse food contact surfaces. Killing germs on surfaces is important... but be sure to rinse any food contact surfaces, or kitchen tools that will later come in contact with food, with potable water after disinfecting them.
  • Rinse toys and other child-accessible surfaces. Remember to rinse toys and other surfaces that a child may handle (or get close to his or her mouth) with potable water after disinfecting.
  • Enforce handwashing at home! You can start at the source by reducing the germs that actually get onto hard surfaces in the first place! Follow strict handwashing rules at home: Hands should be washed before and after touching food, after using the bathroom, after sneezing or coughing, and after coming in from outside.
  • Don't let germs come home from school. In addition to having your kids wash their hands when they get home, remember that germs can travel in on backpacks, library books, instrument cases, and more. A quick dose of disinfecting spray can also kill bacteria on soft surfaces and stop them in their tracks.
