Reducing Allergens in the Bedroom
A main goal in bedroom cleaning is to control dust allergens. Bedrooms contain many soft furnishings, which are ideal places for dust, dust mites, dust mite debris, pollen and pet dander to accumulate. Controlling allergens in the bedroom is particularly important because so much time is spent there.
Reducing Allergens in the Bedroom:
- Wash bedding weekly. The ideal wash water temperature is at least 130°F in order to kill dust mites in the bedding. (NOTE: Be sure to supervise children's water use to prevent scalding.)
- Choose non-allergenic bedding and allergen-proof bed covers. Use only synthetic bedding — no feather or down-filled quilts or pillows. Consider encasing the mattress, box spring, and pillows in dust mite-proof casings.
- Remove clutter. Clutter collects dust, so it also collects dust mites. Remove knickknacks, tabletop ornaments, books, magazines and newspapers from the bedroom.
- Keep all clothes in drawers or closets. Store wool clothes in plastic zipper bags. Keep drawers and closet doors closed, and don't store items under the bed.
- Choose washable stuffed toys and decorative pillows. Keep them off the bed, and wash them frequently.
- If you have allergies, don't allow pets to enter the bedroom.
- Use disinfectant wipes on nonporous surfaces to remove pollen particles, pet dander, and dust mite debris.
- Clean and disinfect commonly touched objects and surfaces like television remote controls, light switches and telephones, especially if someone is sick with a cold or the flu.
