Health & Personal Care for New Moms

As a new mom, staying well is just as important for your baby as it is for you. So to help you keep you up to the challenge of being a new mom, there are some areas you may want to consider when it comes to your health and well-being.

Practice good hygiene

One of the best things you can do so is to make sure your hands are as clean as can be. Just be sure to wash them for at least 20 seconds at a time in order to help remove dirt and germs. Good oral care is also really important, because any infection in your mouth-including cavities and gum disease-affects the health of your whole body and can be passed on to your baby.

Eat right and stay hydrated

It's important that you eat right and drink plenty of fluids. While lactating, your need for calories, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water increases. The USDA's MyPyramid can help you make smart nutritional choices. It's also good to remember that it took many months to put on any pregnancy weight, and likewise it may take a while to take it off.

Get plenty of rest and exercise

With a newborn, your sleeping schedule will most likely be thrown for a loop. But try to get as much rest as you can, and remember that it will take a while to establish a routine. You should consult your doctor first, but getting a bit of exercise each day may help you feel better.
