When To Seek Emergency Care

Contact your healthcare provider immediately or go to the nearest emergency room if any of these conditions occur:

  • Your baby has a large cut or burn, or bleeding that can't be stopped
  • Your baby has a seizure
  • Your baby is having difficulty breathing
  • Your baby suffers a fall and/or receives a head injury
  • Your baby shows a sudden lack of energy or inability to move, or unresponsiveness
  • You see blood in the urine, bloody diarrhea or persistent diarrhea in your baby
  • Your baby seems to have increasing or severe persistent pain
  • Your baby's skin or lips look blue, purple or gray

Poisoning:

If you suspect that your baby has ingested or been exposed to a poisonous substance, call the National Poison Prevention Hotline: 1-800-222-1222. They will ask you to describe your baby's symptoms and what he/she swallowed or was exposed to.

If your baby is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.
