Nutrition

From a nutrition standpoint, your priority during pregnancy is to eat healthfully to get the nutrients you and your unborn baby need. A healthy diet includes proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and plenty of water.

The U.S. government publishes Dietary Guidelines that can help you determine how many servings of each kind of food to eat every day. In addition, USDA's MyPyramid — the U.S.'s framework for healthy dietary management — includes nutritional and activity guidelines that can help you maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. MyPyramid encourages you to:

  • Make smart choices from every food group.
  • Find your balance between food and physical activity.
  • Get the most nutrition out of your calories.
  • Eat the recommended daily servings from each food group:
    • Grains
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • Milk/Yogurt/Cheese
    • Meat/Poultry/Fish/Dry Beans/Eggs/Nuts
    • Oils
    • Discretionary Calories
