MERS Update

Though the general public is at minimal risk, the Middle EAST Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) continues to be closely monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in an effort to understand the organism and help prevent its spread globally.

At this time, the organism is not available for testing in the U.S. for US EPA approval. Since the organism is not available, product efficacy must be determined based on data associated with killing similar or harder to kill viruses. As a result of the absence of testing, the CDC has provided the following information, “Interim Guidance for Preventing MERS-CoV from Spreading in Homes and Communities.” (http://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/mers/hcp/home-care-patient.html.) The CDC recommends using an EPA approved hard surface disinfectant as a precautionary measure.
